Extra research into rom coms

What is a romantic comedy and where did it come from?

The first ever romantic comedy to be seen in cinema was Girl Shy by director Fred.C. Newmeyer in America, it featured Harold Llyod and Jobyna Ralston. The studio to produce this film were Pathe Exchange. Romantic comedies have been a big part of the film industry since this date with massive hits like Bridget Jones diary and Friends with benefits.

Romantic comedies are made up of a contemporary storyline that follows the stereotypical fairytale. A girl meets prince charming, there is some sort of trouble or problem they have to over come and then the end in which the girl and prince charming live happily ever after. You can see this sort of storyline being re-acted throughout films like friends with benefits and the proposal.

Why have we chosen to do a romantic comedy?

I think a romantic comedy will work best for our media production as in the real world  it would be funded by a massive media conglomerate like Time Warner as it is a genre capable of making a lot of revenue. A romantic comedy will also work well as our class have decided to do the horror genre and I feel this would be a different and new approach to the given task as it is unique and no body else has chosen to do it, it would also be more of a challenge as it isnt just one genre like horror, it is a mix of two genres.

unfortunately getting a recorded version of the directors commentary would not work so Liam the director has written his script for what he would have said.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The first major thing I have learnt during the progression is the massive importance of time management and roles. In the preliminary there was no actually set role for any individual in the group whereas with the opening sequence task the giving of specific roles was by far the most important job to do as you had to make sure that the person you are giving that role to could fulfill that to their best. With the handheld camera's I found that they were very easy to operate as they are very straightforward in the means of recording. During the preliminary task I had learned about different camera angles and the 180-degree rule, after showing very amateur usage of the rule in the preliminary I feel like I have taken the rule and the angles in a lot more serious matter and when not using them the scene just didn’t seem to piece together well, so taking this rule seriously was a big step in achieving a smooth finished opening sequence. As our major production was a set to be a Romance Comedy the use of the camera off the tripod was not really needed as my team and I were looking for a smooth and neat film that would capture the elegance of the actors when they portrayed their characters. This meant that gaining further knowledge into using the camera was not really needed, all we need to learn is to keep the turn of the camera smooth and quick, as a result of this any scenes in which the camera is not on the tripod are not very long at all. Editing came a lot easier when we decided to use the tripod in most scenes as it was easy to cut straight to certain points because we could set the camera in a perfect location, hit record and then take out positions for the scene. This also allowed for are team to be a lot more flexible when it came to strictness over the filming. As a whole from preliminary to major production Me and my partners have seen a major advancement in the field of media and have been able to apply this advancement to our major Production.
